A day in Luxembourg
Luxembourg City was gray and overcast on the day of my visit, but even the weather couldn't diminish the impression. This tiny country has created one of the wealthiest economies per capita in the world, and the capital city reflects that prosperity while somehow avoiding feeling soulless.
Luxembourg is a genuine oddity - a Grand Duchy of 650,000 people wedged between France, Germany, and Belgium. It has three official languages (Luxembourgish, French, and German), hosts several major EU institutions, and has become a global hub for finance and satellite communications. The contrast between its medieval old town and the modern European Quarter is striking.
What I Experienced
The city is built on dramatic terrain - deep ravines cut through the landscape, with the old town perched on cliffs above. The views from the fortification walls are spectacular, especially looking down into the Grund district and across to the modern Kirchberg plateau.
The Bock Casemates were the highlight. These underground fortifications, carved into the rock over centuries, form a 17-kilometer network of tunnels and galleries. During World War II, they sheltered 35,000 people from bombing raids. Walking through the dark passages and emerging onto viewpoints overlooking the valley felt genuinely adventurous.
The old town itself is compact and pleasant - cobblestone streets, the Grand Ducal Palace (you can see guards in their distinctive uniforms), and plenty of cafes. It feels prosperous without being flashy, which I appreciated.
Practical Notes
- Luxembourg is the only country where public transport is completely free nationwide
- Euro is the currency
- Most people speak French, German, and English - no communication issues
- The city is very walkable, but wear comfortable shoes for the hills
- The Chemin de la Corniche (nicknamed "Europe's most beautiful balcony") is a must-walk
A perfect day-trip destination from Brussels, Frankfurt, or Paris. Small but genuinely interesting.
