Trip to Iceland
One of the most wanted destinations is done! That was a huge experience.
Iceland is a country of dramatic contrasts - with just 380,000 people spread across an island the size of Kentucky, it's one of Europe's most sparsely populated nations. Sitting on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where tectonic plates diverge, the landscape is shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and geothermal forces found nowhere else on Earth.
What I Experienced
We enjoyed a night with Northern Lights while we didn't expect them at all. The aurora danced across the sky in brilliant green swirls - an experience that's impossible to forget.
The drone captured stunning aerial panoramas of Iceland's volcanic highlands. The moss-covered rhyolite mountains near the Landmannalaugar region glow gold at sunset, with glacial braided rivers carving through valleys below. These landscapes look like another planet.
One highlight was the aerial view of Seljalandsfoss, the famous 60-meter waterfall you can walk behind. From above, you can see how the cascade plunges from the coastal cliffs into the green plains stretching toward the sea.
Beyond the panoramas, we explored hot volcanic springs, watched geysers erupt, and spent 10 hours driving to see the Vatnajökull glacier. We also had a minor off-road car incident with our group (the car flipped, but everyone was fine). Black sand beaches and puffins rounded out the trip - though technically the puffins shouldn't have been there that time of year!
Practical Notes
- Rent a 4x4 if you plan to venture into the highlands
- The Ring Road takes 5-7 days to complete properly
- Bring layers - weather changes rapidly
- Book accommodations early in summer
- The midnight sun means photography opportunities at any hour
