One day at Helsinki, Finland
Finland became my 57th country, but honestly, Helsinki was more of a stopover than a destination this time. My main goal was to experience a cruise for the first time in my life - the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn takes just 2.5 hours, but I opted for an overnight cabin to make it an adventure.
Finland consistently ranks as the happiest country in the world, and Helsinki - home to about 1.5 million people in its metro area - reflects that Nordic quality of life. With 5.5 million people spread across a territory larger than Germany, Finland is one of Europe's least densely populated countries. Most of it is forest and lakes.
What I Experienced
My time in Helsinki was brief but memorable. The city has a distinct aesthetic - clean lines, functionalist architecture, and that unmistakable Nordic design sensibility. Senate Square with its white Helsinki Cathedral felt almost austere compared to the baroque excess of other European capitals.
The overnight cruise was genuinely exciting. These ferries are floating entertainment complexes - restaurants, bars, duty-free shopping, even saunas. Watching Helsinki's harbor lights fade as we headed into the Baltic, then waking up to the approaching Estonian coast, was a unique experience. The Finns and Estonians apparently do this all the time for weekend shopping trips.
What struck me about Finland was how quiet everything felt. Even in the capital, there's a calmness that's different from other major cities. People seem content to exist in their own space without the constant hustle.
Practical Notes
- Euro is the currency
- Helsinki-Tallinn ferries run multiple times daily - book ahead for weekend crossings
- The ferry terminals are easily accessible from both city centers
- Sauna is a national institution - nearly every building has one
- English is universally spoken
I definitely need to return for a proper visit. A day wasn't enough to experience what Finland has to offer - but the cruise was worth the detour.
