Stay at Phuket, Thailand
My second visit to Thailand, and this time I spent over two weeks exclusively in Phuket. After months of hopping between countries during my extended trip, it was nice to slow down in one place - even if that place happened to Thailand's largest island and most famous beach destination.
Thailand remains one of the most popular destinations in Southeast Asia, and for good reason. With 70 million people and an economy largely driven by tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture, it's managed to remain the only Southeast Asian country never colonized by European powers. Phuket itself hosts millions of tourists annually, and the infrastructure shows it.
What I Experienced
Phuket is really two places in one. The west coast has the famous beaches - Patong, Kata, Karon - packed with resorts, restaurants, and the full tourist experience. The rest of the island is quieter, more local, and significantly cheaper. I ended up preferring the less touristy areas after the initial beach exploration.
The water is warm year-round, the sunsets are spectacular, and the food is both delicious and incredibly affordable. I found myself falling into a routine - work in the morning, beach in the afternoon, street food for dinner. The digital nomad infrastructure is excellent: good WiFi everywhere, coworking spaces, and cafes that don't mind you staying for hours.
Island hopping from Phuket opened up even more possibilities. The Phi Phi Islands, James Bond Island, the Similan Islands - all accessible as day trips or overnight excursions. The marine life is incredible if you're into snorkeling or diving.
Practical Notes
- Thai Baht is the currency - roughly 35 baht to 1 USD
- Rent a scooter for freedom - just drive carefully and get insurance
- Rainy season (May-October) means afternoon showers but fewer tourists
- 7-Eleven is everywhere and surprisingly useful
- Thai massage is cheap and excellent - treat yourself daily
Phuket is touristy, but it's touristy for a reason. Sometimes the popular places are popular because they genuinely deliver.
