Stay in Australia
Australia became my 54th country, and after three weeks there I can confirm: it's big, it's really cool, and it's really expensive. One of the top countries I've visited, and definitely one of the greatest places to live in if you can afford it.
Australia is a country of extremes. The 6th largest country in the world by land area, yet with only 26 million people - most concentrated in a few coastal cities. The interior is largely empty outback. The economy is strong, the quality of life is exceptional, and the natural beauty is world-class. Also, everything is trying to kill you (allegedly - I survived).
What I Experienced
We spent about a week in each of the three major east coast destinations: Sydney, Gold Coast, and Melbourne.
Sydney is iconic. The Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge are even more impressive in person than in photos. The harbor itself is stunning - ferries connecting various neighborhoods, beaches everywhere, and that particular Australian light that makes everything look like a travel ad. We walked from Bondi to Coogee along the coastal path, did the Harbour Bridge climb, and explored the historic Rocks district.
Gold Coast was pure resort vibes - skyscrapers on the beach, theme parks, and a slightly surreal atmosphere. It's Australia's version of Miami, complete with endless sunshine and a nightlife scene. The beaches are genuinely excellent, and the hinterland (rainforest just behind the coast) offers a nice contrast.
Melbourne won my heart. More cultural, more European-feeling, with hidden laneways covered in street art, the best coffee in Australia, and a thriving food scene. The city has personality in a way that Sydney's beauty sometimes overshadows.
Practical Notes
- Australian Dollar is the currency - prepare for sticker shock
- Everything is far apart - domestic flights are often the only practical option
- Tap water is excellent everywhere
- Tipping is not expected (refreshingly)
- Winter (June-August) in the south means 10-15°C - pack layers
Worth every expensive meal and overpriced coffee. Australia is genuinely one of the great places on Earth.
