Stay at Malaysia

Malaysia became my 52nd country, and Kuala Lumpur quickly became my favorite discovery of the entire extended trip. We ended up staying almost two months (across multiple visits), and I'm convinced this is one of the best quality-of-life-to-price cities in the world.

Malaysia has 33 million people spread across the Malay Peninsula and northern Borneo. It's a multi-ethnic nation - Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous peoples - which translates into incredible cultural and culinary diversity. The economy is modern and growing, the infrastructure is excellent, and the cost of living is remarkably low for what you get.

What I Experienced

The value in KL is genuinely shocking. Modern two-bedroom apartments in complexes with pools, saunas, and gyms go for $30-40 per night on Airbnb. These aren't shabby places - they're legitimate luxury buildings that would cost 5-10x more in Western cities. We stayed in the KLCC area, steps from the Petronas Towers, for less than a budget hotel would cost in Europe.

The city is developing at a visible pace. I'd estimate 30% of the buildings I could see were under construction. Cranes everywhere. The contrast between the traditional neighborhoods and the gleaming new towers creates an interesting urban landscape.

Electronics and technology access was another pleasant surprise. Apple stores, full Google services, all major brands available at reasonable prices. For digital nomads, the infrastructure is essentially first-world.

The food scene is extraordinary - a genuine fusion of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisines. Nasi lemak, roti canai, char kway teow, tandoori... and it's all incredibly cheap. Street food meals for $2-3 that rival restaurant quality anywhere.

Practical Notes

  • Malaysian Ringgit is the currency - roughly 4.5 MYR to 1 USD
  • Grab (ride-hailing app) is essential and cheap
  • The LRT/MRT system is modern and efficient
  • English is widely spoken, especially in KL
  • Muslim-majority country: modest dress and halal food are the norm

Malaysia should be higher on more people's lists. It's one of the best-kept secrets for quality of life at an affordable price.
