Traveling to Italy

Over two weeks exploring Italy gave me a proper introduction to a country I'd wanted to visit for years. From Rome's ancient ruins to the Amalfi Coast's dramatic cliffs, Italy delivered on every expectation and created many more.

Italy has 59 million people and more UNESCO World Heritage Sites (59) than any other country in the world. Its influence on art, architecture, cuisine, and culture is immeasurable. Fun fact: Italy didn't unify as a single nation until 1861, which explains the strong regional identities that persist today.

What I Experienced

Rome was overwhelming in the best way. The Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon - walking through the city is like walking through 2,000 years of history. I could have spent a month here alone. The Vatican visit (documented separately) was a highlight, though I saved the museums for a future trip.

The Amalfi Coast exceeded expectations. The drive along the cliffside road is hair-raising but spectacular. Positano tumbling down to the sea, Ravello's gardens overlooking the coast, Amalfi town's cathedral - each stop was more beautiful than the last. The limoncello here is the real thing.

Florence gave me Renaissance overload. The Uffizi, the Duomo, Michelangelo's David - so much artistic genius concentrated in one city. The food in Tuscany was exceptional: bistecca alla fiorentina, fresh pasta, and chianti that tasted nothing like what I'd had back home.

Practical Notes

  • Euro is the currency
  • Trains are excellent for inter-city travel; rent a car for the Amalfi Coast
  • Book major museums well in advance (Uffizi, Vatican, etc.)
  • Late September weather is ideal - warm but not oppressive
  • Learn "permesso" (excuse me) - you'll use it constantly

Two weeks wasn't enough for Italy. I barely touched Venice, skipped the lakes entirely, didn't make it to Sicily. This is a country that demands return visits.
