Traveling to Switzerland
A winter week in Switzerland delivered exactly the Alpine experience I was looking for. Snow-capped peaks, precision trains, and landscapes that look too perfect to be real - Switzerland lives up to its postcards.
Switzerland has 8.7 million people and manages to be neutral, prosperous, and stunningly beautiful simultaneously. Four official languages (German, French, Italian, Romansh) reflect its cultural diversity. Fun fact: Switzerland has enough bunker space to shelter its entire population in case of nuclear war, and every citizen is required to have access to a shelter.
What I Experienced
The Swiss trains deserve their reputation. Traveling through the Alps by rail, watching the scenery change from urban to alpine to glacial, is an experience in itself. The timing is impeccable - I started trusting the schedules down to the minute.
Interlaken and the Jungfrau region were the highlights. Taking the cogwheel railway up to Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest railway station, was surreal. Standing on a glacier at 3,454 meters with the Alps stretching in every direction is hard to describe. The cold was intense but worth it.
The drone captured the Swiss Alps in their winter glory. Snow-capped peaks pierce the deep blue sky, with alpine villages clinging to forested hillsides below. The sun creates dramatic shadows across glaciated valleys, revealing the immense scale of these mountains - a panoramic view that captures why the Swiss Alps have captivated travelers for centuries.
Lucerne charmed me with its medieval bridges and lakeside setting. Zurich was more cosmopolitan, more business-focused, but the old town along the Limmat River has real character. The day trip to Liechtenstein (documented separately) rounded out the exploration.
Practical Notes
- Swiss Franc is the currency (expensive by any standard)
- The Swiss Travel Pass pays for itself if you're taking multiple trains
- Book mountain excursions in advance during peak season
- Winter weather is cold but crowds are manageable
- Card payments work everywhere
Switzerland is expensive but efficient and beautiful. The train system alone justifies a visit. I'd love to return in summer to see the green Alps and do some hiking.
