Traveling to Thailand
Two weeks exploring the Land of Smiles! Thailand With a population of around 70 million, Thailand is Southeast Asia's most visited country - and for good reason. This trip was my first taste of Thai hospitality, culture, and cuisine.
Fun fact: Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country that was never colonized by a European power - "Thai" literally means "free."
What I Experienced
Bangkok hits you with sensory overload from the moment you arrive - the heat, the traffic, the temples, the street food. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho (with the enormous reclining Buddha) are must-sees, but the real joy is wandering through the city's countless neighborhoods.
The northern city of Chiang Mai offered a completely different experience - cooler temperatures, a more relaxed pace, and incredible temples scattered across the old city. The night markets here are legendary.
I also spent time in the islands of the south. The turquoise waters, limestone karsts, and beach parties live up to the hype. Getting off the main tourist trail revealed quieter beaches and more authentic Thai life.
Practical Notes
- January-February is peak season - dry and comfortable temperatures
- Street food is incredible and safe - follow the crowds
- Thai massage is a must (and very affordable)
- Learn basic Thai phrases - locals love it
- Respect temple etiquette: remove shoes, cover shoulders and knees
- The baht is weak, making Thailand very affordable
- Island hopping is easy but book ferries in advance during peak season
